New EOS Report by Tino Hyland
END OF SEASONS NYC OCT 3rd and 4th
Saturday morning saw the 52 entrants of the main fleet and the 24 regatta fleet entrants waiting for the forecast abatement of the near gale force winds. Gusts of 42k were regularly seen in on the Dun Laoghaire Harbour board supplied weather station in the NYC. The waves were breaking on the INSIDE of harbour walls showering the walkers on the East Pier with spray. It was decided that the Regatta Fleet should be stood down for the day and that the main fleet should launch after the HSS was gone for 2 races in the Harbour.
Race one...
Dan o Beirne (RSGYC) shot off the starting line and lead the fleet all around the course only to find that he finished incorrectly and had to turn back to cross the finish line correctly loosing place to the 4 juniors who were hot on his heels : Robert Dickson (all the way from Lough Rea via Howth) 1st, Fergus Flood HYC 2nd, Erica Ruigrok SSC 3rd and Adam Hyland (RsGYC)4th. Ironically if Dan had not been 100m ahead he would have lost less places. The four juniors proved the advantage of being awake and listening at the briefing which the Race Officer Con Murphy gave earlier. In fairness to Dan the buoy at the end of the line was small.
Race 2
Was almost a repeat of race 1 with 1195 blasting off the start line like everyone else was standing still except that Dan finished correctly and was 100m ahead of the next sailor Sean Donnelly from the host club, with Niamh Henry RSGYC 3rd and Adam Hyland making a habit of coming 4th! During the race the sailors experienced gusts of 37k which really tried their skills and many unlucky ones swamped or capsized. The reaches and runs were animal with the more experienced sailors surfing past their competition.
Sunday...
The second day of the regatta was light and fluffy. Nice for the committee boat but very unexciting after the previous days conditions. It was NOT a day for the big sailors!
Race 3
Race 3 saw another senior coming to the front of the fleet. Connor Totterdell from the NYC rewarded all his hard work of the past year to win. The screams of excitement from his mum (Dara) in the race office were heard out on the race course. 2nd was Sean Waddilove from Skerries following on from his success at the recent schools nationals where he won the Optimist class. Third was Tadhg Donnelly from the National with Adam Hyland taking up his familiar position in 4th place AGAIN!
Race 4
Race 4 was a race of 2 halves... those who chose lucky left or those who chose to go right or wrong!
Adam Hyland from the George went left to the breeze and won the race by some margin followed by Sean Waddilove (SSC) who was making a habit of coming second with Robert Dickson coming back to the front in 3rd, Sean Donnelly 4th. Alex Walsh RSGYC and Dan Raymond from the sliver fleet giant killing in 5th and 6th place.
Race 5
Race 5 was another race of 2 sides.....left and right and left was right again. Very confusing but Harry Craig from the George was not confused and he won the race by some margin!
Harry was followed home by Sean Donnelly in 2nd, 4 sailors from the George Sandy Aplin 3rd, Harry’s Brother Stephen Craig 4th and Alex Walsh proved that her 5th place in the previous race was no fluke by coming 5th again with Mark Bolger in 6th!
Race 6
The last race saw Adam Hyland and Robert Dickson take a commanding lead over the fleet..
The last beat saw Adam and Robert in a tacking duel with Adam taking first place over Robert followed to the Mark Bolger, That man Dan Raymond again(silver fleet) and Sean Waddilove in 5th.
Overall results
1st Adam Hyland (counting 4,4,4,1,1 total 14 points) At 12 years old Adam is believed to be the youngest winner of the Gorman Trophy. He will be moving on to the senior ranks next year where hopefully he will be able to brush up on his speech skills at many prize givings!

3rd Sean Waddilove
4th Sean Donnelly
5th Erica Ruigrok
4 of the top 4 places are members of the ISA squad who will travel to VIGO on 26th Oct 2009 and to Palma on in December.
