Irish European Team qualify for Team Racing event in Lake Ledro

The Irish European team have qualified for the European Team Racing event in Lake Ledro. It’s a few years since it has happened and perhaps reflects the decision to send our top sailors to the European Chmapionships. To qualify in itself is a tremendous success.

IODAI will fund coach fees and expenses. The sailors themselves are provided with boats by the organisers and free accommodation.  They will of course have to get themselves there and provide all other expenses.

Hopefully the ISA will also now support the benefit of not sending sailors to the Worlds. Sending our best to Europe has at least resulted in this success.

Following the qualification of the team, six of a possible seven eligible sailors indicated their interest in sailing in the IODA European Team Championship. The team can have a maximum of 5 sailors. Accordingly, a selection process was been completed and the following sailors have been selected:

Seafra Guilfoyle

Colm O’Regan

Fiona Daly

Amy Harrington

Tara Flood

IODAI used the results from the European Championships as a basis for selection because it was felt most relevant to the decision. There were two possible ways of choosing 5 from the 6 available. The best 5 overall finishing places (which the way the team qualified) or on the basis of where (in percentage terms) the sailors were in their respective fleets (note that there were 147 boys but only 100 girls).
