Schull - Everything you need to know
Schull update
Thank you all for your entries for Schull. It is lining up to be a fantastic event and we expect to have 150 boats on the water including the ISA squad. We just have to hope now that the snow clears and that we have warm, balmy weather with gentle sea breezes for the week!
The event is being hosted by David Harte of the Fastnet Marine and Outdoor Education Centre.
Arrival
Drive through the Main St in Schull and turn left at The Bunratty Inn. Drive down the Colla Road and you will see the school and planetarium on the left. Turn in here and drive down to the sailing centre. You should arrange to unload your boats and remove car and trailer immediately to enable others easy access. Please follow the stewards’ directions if they are on duty.
Registration
You should return to the registration desk (open from 4 - 7.30pm Sunday and for late arrivals from 8.30-9.30 am on Monday) to register your arrival and pay any outstanding IODAI dues. Check the rotas for catering, launch and recovery, safety and rescue and social activities and you can volunteer for any vacant slots. We will particularly need volunteers towards the end of the week when enthusiasm wanes normally. If you have not already provided your local contact number you will be asked for it and for an alternative number.
RIBS
If you have brought a RIB, please launch it at the pier where it can be tied to the floating pontoon. Please register your arrival and confirm availability for safety and rescue with Fran Thompson or at the information desk.
Information
An information desk will be manned by an IODAI committee member from 4pm to 7.30 p.m. on Sunday and from 8.30 a.m. to 9.30 a.m. and from 4.30 to 5.00p.m. each day to answer any queries you might have. A pad will be available to leave queries when the desk is not staffed. The information Board nearby should be consulted each day.
Chandlery
A chandlery service will be available on the first day provided by Munster Marine and on Thursday by Cork Sailboats. As this is likely to be the first outing of the year you should check your boat and equipment now and order any missing pieces in advance if possible.
Hoodies
Hoodies will be on sale each day
Safety check
Boats and sailors will NOT be allowed to launch until safety checked and passed as is standard at all regattas. It is therefore important that parents remain at the centre until sailors are launched on the first day and that later an adult must be contactable. Parents do not need to return until 4.30 p.m. in case of all fleets but if your child is in the pre-regatta fleet you should check arrangements on the day. Sailors will be “released” at 5p.m. If you are not happy about your child walking home you should collect.
The sailors name will be written clearly on the back of the boat to assist the coaches. We hope to provide peel-off stickers for this purpose.
IODAI will be using a tagging system at this event to ensure we can identify at any given time which sailors are on the water. Each boat will be given an adhesive number that must be affixed to the front of their optimist and two numbers for their trolley to be affixed on either side of the arm of the trolley. You will be given a coloured ribbon at registration to identify the group that you will sail with. This ribbon must be attached to the top of the sprit. Sailors may subsequently change groups on the water if deemed necessary by their coach in which case they will change ribbons when they come ashore
Clothing
Please ensure your child has suitable warm clothes and we strongly recommend a dry suit on grounds of safety and please don’t forget a hat and gloves.
Trolleys
To enable efficient launching and recovery we ask you to make sure your trolley is in good condition, tyres inflated and retaining pins in place. If you do not have a good quality aluminium framed Optiparts trolley, PLEASE arrange to borrow one for the event. The beachmaster may insist that boats on other trolleys launch separately. Please make sure it is identifiable. During the week trolleys will be interchanged to speed up matters and your sailor will get his/her own trolley back at the end of the week
Lunch
Lunch will be provided to sailors by the volunteer parents. It is not provided for siblings/parents! If your child has special dietary requirements/allergies you will have to make your own arrangements. It is anticipated that sailors will come in for lunch but some may have lunch on the water.
Curfew
To enable the sailors to get a good nights rest and benefit fully from the coaching we are recommending that they be indoors by 10 pm.
Shore team
A shore team will be on duty each day to assist a sailor with any difficulty whatsoever and to keep an eye on the facilities. Please tell your child that if they feel unwell, need to go to the toilet or if they are too cold to let their coach know. A safety boat can monitor them while they come ashore. If they have any problem ashore they can ask any member of the slipway or catering team for assistance and if they need to ring their parents for good reason this can be facilitated.
Groups
A sailing schedule will be posted up. Please check your child’s group. On a given morning some groups will have fitness and others will not. If on a given morning a sailor has fitness scheduled they should arrive at the sailing centre in tracksuit and runners. They will rig their boats, then fitness, then change, then launch as instructed by the beachmaster. If fitness is not scheduled they should arrive in their sailing gear if possible
The fleets will be divided into 9 groups based on last year’s rankings
The top five groups will be coached in skill sets by different coaches and so your sailor may not have the same coach each day. Racing will take place in the afternoons. Coaching will continue during this racing and the ISA squad will participate in these also.
All parents are expected to be available on the last afternoon to assist with recovery, repatriation of trolleys and prizegiving. Times to be confirmed on Friday morning.
