Kinsale YC Christmas Regatta
Kinsale YC Christmas Regatta
Last weekend Thirty four ‘Oppy Mad’ hardy sailors turned up for the KYC annual Christmas Regatta. Sailors made great efforts to attend this highly competitive event with a good turnout from Tralee and RCYC. Furthest travelled sailor was Erica Ruigrok making the long journey from Rush Co Dublin. The weather on Saturday was crisp and dry, wind from NW puffing at 8-10 knots and a warm 2 degrees. PRO Neil Prendeville with the help of the ever enthusiastic National Coach Thomas Chaix set a course using the outer loop opposite Charles Fort. 420 sailors Cian O’Regan and Iarlaith Kennedy were on the water to maintain rule observance and the cast was set for what was to be a highly contested event.
Local light airs specialist Aodh Kennedy, fresh from his outstanding result in Palma led the way securing two bullets before the fleet were sent ashore in time to see the Munster game. Ashore sailors were greeted with hot chocolate while the parents had to make do with hot whiskey courtesy of Adrienne and Louise.
Sunday brought blue skies a watery sun and a fresh breeze of 12-18 knots. A very hotly contested start line in race three caught a few sailors OCS at the pin however they all dipped back through the line and made for the left side of the course to avoid the tide. Local sailor Sean Gambier Ross took the advantage and led from start to finish closely followed by Daire Cournane and Colm O Regan. Race four saw Brendan Lyden score a bullet to draw him ever so closer to Aodh.
Going into race five Patrick Crosbie, Conor Murphy, and Colm O’Regan after discarding his OCS from Day one were now in the shakeup but it was the consistency of Brendan Lyden who won the event and in doing so, sets out his stall for the up and coming trials next season.
Well done to all the competitors and parents who made this a great social event with top level competition and a preview of who is going to be on the pace for 2009.
Happy Christmas to All in ‘Oppyland’.
