Rankings

The Committee apologise for the delay in issuing the latest rankings following the Nationals.

Here is the latest position:

In March 2008 IODAI posted the following criteria for rankings on the website:

To qualify for a ranking, a sailor may use their 2 best Regional events plus the Nationals (which is non discardable). Sailors that do not sail in at least 2 Regional events and the Nationals shall not qualify for a ranking. A nominal penalty figure of 3000 points shall be applied to a sailor’s rankings for not attending an event.

The ranking points awarded shall consist of the sailor’s event placing multiplied by the number of races completed in the event. The sailor with the lowest score shall be ranked 1st and so on. Sailors shall remain Gold once they have achieved that ranking within their fleet from 2008 onward.

At the Nationals it became apparent that our normal results software programmes would not handle these criteria to our requirements.  The following notice was posted on the notice board in Tralee:

The fleet rankings generated for the 2008 season will be based on the following criteria:

·         A Sailor’s 2 best places in the 4 Regional events

·         Finishing place in Nationals double weighted (place pts x 2)

·         The Nationals result is non-discardable

This is a change from the originally planned methodology but in line with the plan to weight the importance of our Nationals compared to the Regional events.

The top 35 Sailors in the Senior and Junior Fleet will be invited to the trials in Spring 2009, subject of course to sailors ageing out and formally retiring.

The Committee have considered this issue and the criteria posted at Tralee will be the criteria used for the 2008 rankings.

However it has become apparent that a small number of sailors would be disadvantaged by the application of one criteria or the other.  This is particularly important to those sailors around the crucial 35th place in Junior and Senior fleets, (the limit for trials qualification).

So that no sailor is disadvantaged the Committee have decided that should a sailor qualify for trials or any other invitation under either criteria then that qualification will be honoured and the sailor invited. This may mean a slight increase in the numbers invited to the trials but the committee see this as a fair and equitable solution which ensures that no sailor is disadvantaged.

There is a great amount of work involved in preparing and auditing the rankings and in this particular case much of the work has to be done manually.  Again the Committee apologise for the delay but the rankings will be posted as soon as possible.
