Latest Trials News:

Thursday 17th April 2008:  66 sailors successfully registered for the trials however with a disapointing weather forecast for the next three days, hopes for sailing tomorrow are low.

Friday 18th April 2008:  10 30am:  As expected and with force 7 winds forecast racing has been abandoned for the day.  Local swimming pools, cinemas, unofficial rugby pitches and golf courses are being sourced as alternative entertainment venues.  Race Officer Martin Byrne is hoping that the weather may abate and at least some races will be held over the weekend.

Saturday 19th April 2008: 10 30 am:  Yet another frustrating day for sailors, coaches, parents, and organisers.  With a poor forecast for the day and no sign of a let-up in the constant easterly winds, PRO Martin Byrne addressed all competitors and supporters at 10 am this morning to announce "racing abandoned for the day".  Yet another day of swimming, shopping, long lunches and endless expressions of hope of at least some racing tomorrow.  With a forecast that predicts an abatement on Sunday afternoon Martin Byrne has taken the step of posting an "amendment to sailing instructions" allowing racing to take place after the previously designated 3pm deadline.  His hopes are that with one or two races here in Howth combined with a full three day programme at Kinsale in two weeks time we will have a credible event to decide the Irish World and European Teams for 2008.

Sunday 20th April 2008After three frustrating days, PRO Martin Byrne took the final step of abandoning racing for the last day of the first leg of the trials.  Three days of consistent easterly and North-easterly winds struck the final blow when the expected Sunday abatement failed to be supported by the morning's weather forecasts.  Even had the wind eased, the race area was expected to be blighted by a residual swell for several days making racing impossible.  Many seasoned observors remarked that in their long years of sailing experience they have difficulty remembering a three day event experiencing such an unlucky weather pattern.

Sunday 4th May 2008:  Three days racing.  Now 11 races sailed in the trials.  The leaders and teams are becoming established and with light winds forecast for Monday it is unceratin if or how much racing will take place.  It's all very tight for the final place teams so it's all to play for.

Monday 5th May 2008:  With very light winds Race Officer Martin Byrne had a difficult job on his hands on the final day of the trials.  The first race of the days was abandoned after a windshift as the lead boats approached the windward mark.  The second race eventually got under way in very light conditions and threw up a surpirse winner in Ruairi Finnegan.  There were other surprise successes and disappointments in the very light airs.  With no time to start a final race the teams were decided.
