IODAI MUNSTER TRAINING RCYC 23RD 24TH Feb

A very productive two days on the water was had by 34 sailors headed up by B’meer coach George Kingston and supported by his team of Fionn Jenkinson, George Kenefick, Donnagh Good and Cian Martin.

Sailors and coaches met up Saturday morning at the respectable time of 10am and after splitting into groups they all launched into a fresh south westerly. The Curlane bank was the chosen spot for the days activities with plenty of ‘rabbit starts’ and long bale & sail grinds. The younger sailors in the group are starting to look very comfortable in gusts of 20 knots and it was easy to see that the winter coaching programme is starting to pay huge dividends. After two hours of various exercises sailors and coaches broke for a well deserved lunch break on the water.

After lunch, all groups joined up with ISA squad members who were been coached by Thomas and David for two long races. This gave the sailors the chance to see who was on the ‘pace’ and the training races were hotly contested with 42 sailors pushing the line. The fresh conditions contributed to plenty of bailing and the odd capsize.

The groups headed ashore at 3.30 where the RCYC parents had well deserved hot chocolate and marshmallows ready for all.

Sunday brought similar wind strengths from the North West, but flatter seas made for more comfortable sailing. The same drill was executed with rabbit starts and long grinds followed by racing in the afternoon.

After two long days of sailing there was still some energy for dinghy park football skills with Vicki Cudmore showing up the boys in a game of ‘keepy Upys’.

Parents and tired sailors headed back to their respective clubs having had a great weekend with superb Cork Harbour sailing conditions.
