If you are planning to sail in the Regatta Fleet at any of the IODAI Regional’s or at the National’s you will receive special coaching at each of these events (at no extra cost).
Here's the plan for the Regatta fleet:
1. Activities
Activities in the Regatta fleet will be split approximately between some training, some racing (with coach support) and fun activities (ashore and/or on the water).
2. Daily programme
The programme for each day is expected to be as follows:
09:30 Activities start - meet for briefing (venue to be advised on event notice board)
(boats rigged with sails down, sailors changed)
Launch after the Main Fleet.
12:30 Finish morning activities - parents responsible for lunch etc
13:30 Afternoon activities begin - meet at the race office
16:30 Activities finish
When the opportunity presents itself, we plan to have a ""sail-away", so the sailors will be active from 09:30 to 16:30, and should bring a packed lunch.
The choice of day is weather dependent, so please keep an eye on the Regatta Fleet notice board for updates.
3. Parents responsibilities
Parents will be responsible for their children before 09:30 each day, during lunchtime (12:30 to 13:30) and after 16:30.
Between these times, each participant must have a nominated adult on site who can take responsibility for a participant in the event of illness, injury, gear failure or simply not wishing to take part for a while!
4. Management of the Regatta Fleet
For the first time this year, we will also have a Lead Coach, who is a former Optimist sailor, instructor and coach.
Host club sailing instructors or coaches, working with groups of up to eight sailors will support the coach. These groups will be split based on sailing ability.
5. Skills of sailors
To ensure that all participants benefit from being in the Regatta Fleet, participants should be able to at least sail a triangle. Participants must be aged at least age 8.
6. Safety
Previous experience indicates that it is quite difficult to find sufficient RIBS to look after the Regatta Fleet.
If you are able to provide a RIB to support the Regatta Fleet, please let us know as soon as possible.
7. On shore activities
We would like the parents of each squad group (eight sailors) to work together to provide up to an hour of on-shore activity for the sailors each day. These activities could include:
- Making boats from plastic bottles - maybe one per four sailors?
- Treasure hunts (within the club, search for clues, etc.)?
- Making a collage from seaweed, shells etc?
- Chalk portrait competition (drawn on flagstones)
8. Bad weather
If the weather is unsuitable for Regatta Fleet activities, then the coaches will work with the sailors for part of the day on shore-based learning. However, the Lead Coach may decide that Regatta Fleet activities will end at lunchtime on these days - parents will then be responsible for their children for the remainder of the day.
9. Any questions, suggestions etc
- If you have any suggestions or questions about the Regatta Fleet at IODAI events, please contact a member of the IODAI Committee.
