OPTIMIST TRAINING CAMP IN SCHULL

A very international coaching team welcomed 115 optimist sailors from every corner of the country.

David Harte was leading the camp alongside ISA junior coach Thomas Chaix, Italian National Team Coach Massimo Giorgianni, South African Andrea Giovanni, Nicholas O Leary, Jenny Murray, Cillian Magee, Conor O Brien, Kieran Kelliher and Andrew Duggan.

4 groups were defined to ease the management of the camp. Each morning, Antoine Brossard spent an hour on fitness topics with the top two groups.

The weather was definitely not on our side with two days sailing lost for the younger sailors and one day lost for the most senior ones. This however allowed extra time to work on boat and sail preparation. The other 3 days were optimised afloat and the kids progressed well with some very young sailors showing excellent promise.

Camp achievements:

- 3 warm up runs
- 2 fitness sessions
- 3 stretching sessions
- a presentation on Sleep and nutrition
- 12-15 hours on the water
- 8 Races
- a 30-45 min one to one coaching session afloat (by group of 6) for each sailor
- a workshop on sail Rigging and sail settings
- a presentation on rules and situations
-  video analysis of techniques

At the final debrief  Conor Lyden who showed great motivation, fast improvement and positive attitude, was presented the Coaches award by last year winner Daniel Browne.

The top 10 of the Schull camp 8 races league went home with prices. Well done to Richie Harrington (1st, 48 pts), Cian O"Regan (2nd, 48pts) and Conor Lyden (3rd, 58pts).

A special mention to Jenny Andreasson, Diana Kissane and Jane Butler who organised a successful sailors Quiz on Wednesday evening.

IODAI Parents' Mid-Year Forum Schull,
Tuesday 20th February 2007 6.00 pm

It is a "first" for IODAI to have a mid-year forum and an opportunity to contribute views, criticisms, and ideas, all intended to benefit IODAI and its members now and into the future. The forum will be informal and will be chaired by David Harte who has vast knowledge and skills relevant to the Optimist fleet at home and abroad.

There have been a higher number of applications than expected for the February training in Schull. The committee are marking every effort to cater for the higher numbers, in particular to try to arrange sufficient rescue and coaches. Late applications will only be accepted on the basis that they can be accommodated safely.
